During the course of teaching a class to hundreds of avid entrepreneurs that wanted to learn how to start an Import Export business, it dawned on me that I could tell them how I used the importing of items for sale into a way and means of just helping reduce the cost of vacation travel.
First, if you’re interested in starting a business, it must be with the intent to make it just that, a business.
But, if you just want to help cover the costs of some vacation travel, the way and means remains the same. I cautioned all in the class to not spend any more money than necessary to obtain a sample of whatever item they wanted to consider importing as a business. If it is then decided to not pursue an import business, then you can either use or sell your sample.
The United States allows up to $2000 of merchandise to be brought back to the States without having to pay any duty. With the VaCayPay monthly suggestion as to what country and what item(s) a vacation traveler might consider buying - all with the intent to sell to friends, family, neighbors or even on the internet, the traveler could greatly reduce their actual out of pocket travel costs.
I, and others, have personally purchased items in numerous countries that when brought them back and well under the $2000 duty limit; sold them and in some cases, covered nearly all of the trip expenses.

Using personal examples of Importing and Exporting, I taught a class called, Introductory to starting an Import/Export business.
Personal examples included the importing of components and hardware from several countries with which to manufacture a product and then exporting of the manufactured product to many different countries. This was done with several different unrelated items over the course of many years.
My class covered everything from the potential market(s) to what type of business organization would best be created to maximize their endeavors. The most stringent demand I placed on the participants was to make sure they had a business plan before they spent a penny.
